Halitosis, which is commonly known as bad breath, is one of the embarrassing health conditions which approximately 30% of people across the world are suffering. Other medical terms for this include fetor oris, stomatodysodia, and ozostomia. The foul-smelling odor which comes from mouth is due to cavity. As per the Academy of General Dentistry, in 90% of cases, the odor is created in mouth, throat, and tonsils.

  • At least twice a day you must brush and floss your teeth. Make sure you have a toothbrush with soft bristles that doesn’t do much harm to enamel or gums. Brushing and flossing can help you to remove food and plaque which can be used by anaerobic, sulfur-producing bacteria as a fuel source.
  • Use oral care products like toothpastes and mouthwashes which help you to fight from bad breath or halitosis.
  • Have fibrous fruits and vegetables to get rid of bacteria from your mouth. Make a habit of eating an apple a day as it can help you to moisten the mouth, too.
  • Avoid dry mouth. Stimulate your salivary flow. Chew gum, mints or lozenges which are sugar free and have anti-cavity properties.
  • Bacteria can cause bad breath flourish in an acidic oral environment. So brush your teeth with baking soda which will help you to neutralize excess acids found in oral cavity.

Ways to Prevent Bad Breath

Preventing halitosis or bad breath is quite easier than treating it. By using the healthy habits, you can effectively prevent it.

1.    Use mouthwash – Some mouthwashes or oral rinses are great at preventing bad breath. However you should never use alcohol based mouthwashes as it can make your mouth very dry which can make the problem worse.
2.     Green and black teas contain polyphenols which remove sulfur compounds and reduce oral bacteria. So make a habit of drinking green and black teas.
3.     Avoid using oral hygiene products which sodium lauryl sulfate or alcohol.
4.     Wash your mouth after eating meat, fish or dairy products
5.     Drink plenty of water.
