Dark Chocolate is Good For Your Teeth, Really!

Chocolate are always found to be an enemy of your pearly teeth but what if one day you come to know that they can actually be good for your teeth! Yes, you heard me correctly -- chocolate can prevent tooth decay. But let me mention one thing not every chocolate is dental dynamite. The cocoa bean keeps the good stuff.

Cocoa beans contain tannins, flavonoids, and polyphenols and each of these are strong antioxidant which benefits your mouth and teeth. Tannins is the thing that gives dark chocolate a bitter taste and are also responsible for sweet's dark pigments. Additionally it even prevents cavities by restraining bacteria from sticking to your teeth. Flavonoids works to slow down the tooth decay and Polyphenols limits the effects of bacteria, which means that it works to neutralize the microorganisms which causes bad breath, prevents the infections in your gums and fight tooth decay.

Among the three type of chocolates (dark, milk and white chocolate), dark chocolate is the best one and least processed and closest to cocoa bean and it makes the healthiest option to protect your teeth even though you eat chocolate. For the better result the chocolate should be around 70 percent cocoa. Ghirardelli's Midnight Reverie and Lindt's Cocoa Supreme Dark, contain 86 and 90 percent cocoa, Ghirardelli's Twilight Delight contains 72 percent cocoa, Hershey's Extra Dark Chocolate contains 60 percent cocoa. Another question and concern is about the sugar levels in chocolate. Some chocolate has high levels of sugar by generally it is characterized by dissolving quickly and thus no time to increase the acid levels.
The concern with chocolate is the amount of caffeine. Chocolate is high in antioxidants which are the group of molecules which keep your body healthy on the cellular level. Dark chocolate contains up to four times the level which is usually found in the green tea. The high amount of f antioxidants in saliva is shown to fight periodontal disease. Here we are breaking the myth that was taught that chocolate is ruining our teeth.
